Wokha September 10 (MExN): The first Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) in Wokha district was inaugurated by Dr. Manazir Jeelani Samoon, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Wokha on September 10.  


The CMO office Wokha in a press release stated that during the programme, the DC stated that the UPHC will provide essential health services and lessen the burden of District Hospital Wokha for secondary and tertiary cases.

He highlighted on the importance of accessibility, affordability, equitable, technology appropriate and relevant, focus on maternal and child health care for smooth functioning of the UPHC. The DC urged the health workers to effectively deal with challenges related to adequate manpower, communitization, and proper referral system and land issues.


Dr. Thanghoi Lam, SPO NHM lauded the efforts of the medical staffs in setting up the health centre and hoped that the DC will be actively involved in the function of UPHC. He further said that the UPHC will provide free health services under various programmes and vertical programmes.


Chief Medical Officer Wokha, Dr. Robin Lotha stated that the UPHC will benefit the urban population. He informed that availability of free facilities such as medical checkup, medicine, medical laboratory test, routine immunization for children and labour room facility. The UPHC staffs will also tie up with Social Welfare department and observe nutrition day in wards and colonies every month, he added. 


Dr. W. Nchumbemo Ezung, Joint Director, who was also present at the programme, noted on the importance of direct purchase of land for setting up health centres to avoid the problem of land issues. 


The programme was chaired by Dr. Achumi K Kikon, MO UPHC Wokha Town and welcome address delivered by Zaremo Kikon, Chairman HCMC, UPHC. Rev. Thungrio Khuvung, Pastor Wokha Town Baptist Church pronounced the dedication prayer for the UPHC. The programme was attended by Dy.CMO, MS, MOs, and medical staffs, officials from Health and Family Welfare Department Kohima and civil societies.
