Village threaten to reoccupy Intangki

Evict Beisumpuikam village or face action, Naga United Village Council tells State govt

Dimapur, September 13 (MExN): The Chairman, P. Shing Khimungan, and head GB, Kivito Hebo, of the Naga United Village Council (NUVC), through a press release, have underlined their resolve to reoccupy Intangki National Park unless Beisumpuikam village is also evicted from the area.

As per a meeting held on June 20, 2009 in Kohima, the Nagaland government, including 60 MLAs and 2 MPs, along with tribal representatives, resolved to preserve the National Park. In this respect, the Nagaland government was authorized to evict all encroachers from the Park but the “Nagaland government finds difficult to evict Beisumpuikam,” states the release.

At the 2009 meeting, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio assured the Intangki settlers who vacated their land that they will be looked after. Hence, “the Naga United Village consisting of 14 tribes, with 457 households in the list submitted to the Nagaland Forest Department.”

“The settlers of the Naga United Village, Intangki have arrived at a decision to approach the Nagaland government for an alternative arrangement for the landless citizens who have voluntarily vacated and are waiting the decision of the state government,” said the NVUC. These conditions will be submitted to the Chief Secretary of Nagaland, and a copy sent to the CM for final approval. The release warned that “if our generous appeal is not considered on humanitarian ground we shall take up action at our level.”
