Donning T-shirts imprinted with the logo ‘Where passion meets conservation’, members of the Anglers Association Nagaland (AAN) today undertook their first phase of ‘Mission clear water body campaign’ here at Chathe River, New Chumukedima Village.

Assisted by New Chumukedima volunteers, the AAN members picked plastic and other wastes littered on the banks of Chathe River stretch under New Chumukedima Village jurisdiction, a hotspot for picnickers.

AAN also planted tree saplings on some sites and simultaneously launched a banner campaign to spread awareness on the need to protect and conserve water bodies, indigenous fish species and flora and fauna in the state.

AAN’s campaign is in tune with the ‘Mission clean water body’, an initiative of All India Game Fishing Association (AIGFA), which is aimed at maintaining integrity and overall health of water bodies throughout India by launching a cleanliness drive of freshwater resources along with associated catchment areas.

Before the cleanliness and plantation, drive a brief programme was held on the banks of Chathe where AAN president, Phukato Sumi, explained on the guiding principles of ‘Clean water body’ campaign. He also highlighted on the objectives of AAN including promotion of angling as a recreational sport for all age groups, promotion of eco-tourism in the state through angling and other attraction in and around water bodies, and protwction and conservation of water bodies both man made as well as natural.

In a welcome surprise, two officials of the State Soil & Water Conservation department including joint director, Viliehu Nguzhü, and deputy director, Khekiho Shohe, also turned up at the venue unannounced. The two departmental officers said they heard and read about AAN’s initiative in the local papers and social media and decided to visit the campaign site to convey their appreciation to the efforts of AAN. Representatives from the New Chumukedima Village Council and youth organization also assured to work jointly with AAN to keep Chathe River clean.
