With the aim to spotlight ethical norms in AI-driven markets, fostering heightened awareness among consumers, Wokha District commemorated World Consumer Day under the theme ‘Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers’ at Lotha Hoho Conference Hall, Wokha on March 15.
The event was organised by Wokha District Legal Service Authority (WDLSA) in collaboration with the Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection Wokha and the Consumer Rights Organisation Wokha.
District and Session Judge Nino Iralu of Wokha, underscored the critical importance of consumer empowerment, urging every individuals to speak up and voice their concerns against unethical practices in the market. She emphasised that filing complaints wasn't about seeking punishment for service providers but about correcting wrongs to safeguard others from encountering substandard services.

Additionally, she highlighted the contributions of Wokha District Legal Service Authority and Consumer Rights Organisation Wokha, both of which offer free services and urged individuals who have witnessed poor service to step forward and join hands in improving the community.
The theme speaker Thungbeni Kikon, Legal Advisor of WDLSA, provided insights into how AI impacts marketing and ecommerce, often to the detriment of consumers. She highlighted 13 key strategies to equip consumers against fraudulent marketing tactics, especially online scams driven by AI. She also advised online shoppers to be cautious when divulging personal details on digital platforms.

Panel lawyer and resource person, Yangrothung Humtsoe provided insights into the Consumer Rights Protection Act, highlighting its importance in protecting consumer interests. He educated the audience about their entitlements, such as the right to access information and the right to lodge complaints against unjust business practices. Humtsoe recommended that consumers seek assistance from the District Consumers Forum Office to resolve issues related to unethical conduct.
Renbonthung Tsanglao, panel lawyer representing WDLSA, addressed the audience on the Consumer Dispute and Redressal Forum, emphasising the significance of comprehending the rights of both consumers and service providers. He encouraged consumers to maintain composure and refrain from resorting to violence when disputes emerge during transactions, emphasizing the importance of peaceful resolution.
The event culminated with a plea for cooperative endeavors between consumers and regulatory bodies, underlining the necessity of joint action. An interactive session was conducted, facilitating engagement with the attendees.
