World Soil Day observed across Nagaland

Kohima, December 5 (MExN): In commemoration of World Soil Day - December 5, the District Agriculture Office Kohima marked the day with its officials, staffs and farmers’ friends stressing on the importance of soil.  

The programme was chaired by Rokoshuno Angela, Dy PD, ATMA. Vizonyii Liezie, DAO & PD, ATMA in his keynote address briefed about the agricultural status of Kohima. Everything begins with soil regardless of flora and fauna hence soil management and conservation is the key to soil productivity. The work done and on-going work by the office regarding Soil Health Cards was also highlighted by Liezie.  

Kethoneilhou Vimera, AO-II, DAO Kohima shared about the history of World Soil Day and importance of soil. Soil is where life begins and hence it plays a very crucial role for livelihood on this earth. He opined that our soil is at great risks due to poor management hence, soil conservation is the need of the hour for sustainable living.  

The Government of India launched the Soil Health Cards scheme in February 2015 under which Kohima district is also working, covering various villages reaching out to the farmers. The benefit of Soil Health Cards was shared and later the Soil Health Cards were distributed to the farmers by the DAO Kohima.  

The Department of Soil and Water Conservation celebrated World Soil Day on December 5 under the theme ‘Soils and Pulses, A Symbiosis For Life’ at the Directorate of Soil and Water Conservation conference hall with T. Nungsang Ao, Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Nagaland as the chief guest.  

The programme had special invitees from the Department of Soil and Water Conservation, Government of Kerela where the officers from the state of Kerala shared various schemes and programmes of their Government and also shared their field experiences. Samad, Deputy Director, Government of Kerala shared about World Soil Day celebrations in Kerala which is celebrated with much enthusiasm and participation from all the stakeholders in Kerala each year.  

Speaking on the occasion, the Director Imkongneken Ao, spoke about the importance of World Soil Day, the importance of symbiotic relationship between soils and pulses which is an important factor for sustainable agriculture and its overall production.  

The programme was chaired by Imtiyondang Ao, Joint Director where welcome address was delivered by E. James Lotha, Joint Director and Vote of thanks was pronounced by Dr. Kiyasetuo Vizo, Deputy Director
