Young people more vulnerable to mental illness: Nagaland Health Dept

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 6 (MExN): Stating that the young people are becoming more vulnerable to mental illness in today’s world, the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare (DoHFW), Nagaland has given a clarion call to show concern and help raise awareness on mental health.

With the World Mental Health Day to be observed on October 10 on the theme ‘Young people and Mental Health in the changing World,’ the DoHFW through its Mission Director, NHM, Dr. Kevichusa Madikhru on Saturday urged all to join hands and work together to emphasize the needs of our young people.

It expressed concern that young people are being put to constant mental disturbance for no fault of theirs as a consequence of which suicide and substance abuse numbers have been steadily rising. The DoHFW stated that young people are the age when serious mental illness can occur and yet they are taught little to nothing about mental health.

The DoHFW therefore said it is time to show concern and help raise mental health awareness and bring attention to the issues the youth and young adults are facing in our world today and begin the conversation around what they need in order to grow up healthy, happy and resilient.

“It is time to take a stand and demand more for this vulnerable population-our future depends on it,” it stated.
