Zunheboto | December 11
The Zunheboto Town Council (ZTC) organised an essay writing competition on the topic “Legacy Waste Management” on December 3 at Government Higher Secondary School, Zunheboto, for students aged 14 to 21 years, and held a felicitation programme for the participants at the ZTC Conference Hall here on Wednesday.
The programme was chaired by EAC Headquarters Zunheboto, Tsoinchu Z A Sangtam, and opened with an invocation by ZTC Councillor Hukatoli H Awomi.
Additional Deputy Commissioner and Executive Officer, ZTC, Tiameren Chang attended the event as the special guest. Deputy Chairperson of ZTC, Vihoto Zhimo, delivered greetings.
Addressing the gathering, Chang underscored the growing importance of waste management across the country, noting that major Indian cities have made significant progress due to improved waste management systems. He urged the youth of Zunheboto to take proactive steps towards cleanliness, stating that while the town may lack facilities available in metropolitan cities, responsibility for initiating change should not rest solely on town councillors.
“Students often have the information, dates and solutions, but we do not act. Let us start today,” he said. He added that Nagas must change their mindset and begin contributing individually.
Estimating the town’s population to be between 50,000 and 60,000, he said that if each person picked up even one piece of garbage a day, Zunheboto could become the cleanest town in Nagaland.
Referring to the issue of educated unemployment, he advised students to work hard, remain sincere and persevere.
EAC Sangtam quoted Mahatma Gandhi, reminding the gathering to “be the change you want to see.”
The ZTC felicitated the winners of the competition: First: Arikato Achumi, Second: Leah H Aye, Third: Kika H Yeptho.
