ZYF condemns Sept 6 shooting, asks government to intervene

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 9 (MExN): The Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF) today condemned the violent incident related to land dispute at the Dimapur-Peren boundary on September 6 and called for intervention from the Nagaland State Government and the Government of India.

A press release from the ZYF stated that the Government of India and Government of Nagaland “should prove its worth of existence by immediately booking those land encroachers and identify those persons or groups who are responsible for such unlawful act of burning down of the village.”

“The Zeliangrong people owning vast and large contiguous land today are inherited from our ancestors who had fought fiercely and defeated their enemy while protecting and safeguarding it from different encroachers in the past, therefore, the question of the present generation to compromise or surrender of our ancestral land to encroachers will never arise if the situation compel us to do so,” it added.

“It would be a wrong conception to presume that the burning down of the Lamhai Namdi village on 6th of this month by some armed persons suspected to have been carried out in collusion with some land encroachers may have deterred the Zeliangrong people,” the ZYF stated. It said that this has instead provided a “boost” to the Zeliangrong people “to face any consequences” if the competent authority fails to do the needful in the interest of peace and tranquility in the region.

It meanwhile also called for an impartial inquiry into the matter and demanded demarcation of the boundary “based on traditional land boundary between different tribes of Nagaland for once and for all.”
