Mon, October 8 (MExN): The 69th National Wildlife Week under the theme ‘Partnership for Wildlife Conservation’ was celebrated in Mon district on October 7. Inter-school quiz and painting competition was organised by Mon Forest Division at Government Higher Senior Secondary School, Mon town. A total of eight schools of Mon Town participated in the competitions.

Rajesh Kumar, IFS, DFO Mon in his speech highlighted the importance of Wildlife Week and stressed the importance of wildlife in Nagaland. He called upon the student as the flag-bearer of conservation of wildlife in future through creating the awareness in their society.

The painting competition was won by Sacred High School, while Green Valley School and St Mary School received second and third prize respectively. Green Valley School, Mon won the quiz competition while Sacred High School and Christ King School won second and third prize respectively. 

Limawapang, School Teacher, GHSS Mon highlighted the importance of such programme on regular basis to create awareness among the school children on wildlife conservation and Environment protection.

Chen town: A similar programme was also conducted in High School, Chen town by Forest Beat office, Aboi. In the opening remarks, K Lachu, Monitoring & Evaluation Expert, NFMP Mon welcomed the Headmaster of GHS, Chen, AK Singh, students and teaching staff of the school.

Beat Office Incharge, Kikavi Chophi, RFO, informed that National Wildlife Week is annually observed across India to spread the awareness of the importance of Wildlife and its conservation in India. Addressing the students, Chophi cited the examples of Amur Falcon, Sendenyu Community Reserve and several conservation efforts undertaken here itself in Nagaland under the aegis of Department of Environment Forest & Climate Change towards the conservation of wildlife and the environment. 

He added that wildlife is an integral part of the whole ecosystem and efforts of everyone are required to succeed in conservation. He encouraged the gathering by saying that the next exemplary conservation efforts should be brought about from the Chen area as it still consist of one of the most pristine forest of Nagaland.

The programme also had quiz competitions for the students with prizes distributed for the winners of the competition.
