ASU urges resolution of RMSA teachers’ issue

Kohima, September 21 (MExN): The Angami Students’ Union (ASU) has expressed appreciation for the “valuable service rendered by the RMSA teachers over the years in shaping education and guiding the lives of countless students,” while voicing deep concern over the ongoing agitation by the 2016 batch RMSA teachers and its impact on students.

In a statement, the Union said teachers remain “the cornerstone of society,” and their role in nurturing the future generation is duly recognised. However, it warned that the continued agitation has “seriously hampered the functioning of schools and the smooth conduct of education, creating uncertainty to the students’ community.”

ASU recalled that “the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Division Bench (16th March 2022) and subsequently the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India (20th May 2025) have already delivered clear and conclusive judgments on the matter.” It urged the State Government to “respect and implement the Court’s rulings without any further delay” and cautioned that “prolonged inaction will only deepen the crisis.”

The Union extended its support to the ultimatum served on September 17 by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) through its emergency Presidential Council meeting. “Failure to act within the stipulated time, the Union shall be compelled to consider firm steps in the larger interest of the students,” it said.

At the same time, ASU appealed to the RMSA teachers to recognise that “while their concerns may be genuine, the academic future of innocent students must not be held in uncertainty.” It urged them “to come to an understanding and resume classes at the earliest, even as the process of addressing their grievances continues through the proper channels.”

“The Union reiterates that the welfare of the students’ community is its foremost concern. We call upon both the State Government and the teachers to resolve the issue responsibly and without delay, keeping the greater good of the students above all else,” ASU stated.
