As part of the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) launched by the NITI Ayog to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth, an Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) has been installed at Corner Stone Higher Secondary School (CSHSS), Dimapur. The laboratory was inaugurated on April 3 by the Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur Sushil Kumar Patel.

The objective of the AIM, as stated in the mission statement, is to promote technology driven “world-class Innovation Hubs, Grand Challenges, Start-up businesses and other self-employment activities.”

ATL is a sub-component of the AIM through which the Government of India seeks to further the undertaking of creating an environment of scientific temperament, innovation and creativity amongst students.

The ATL comes equipped with educational tools and kits. In the lab, students will be mentored to get acquainted with the workings of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), while inculcating skills such as design mindset, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing etc.

“ATL would contain educational and learn “do it yourself” kits and equipment on – science, electronics, robotics, open source microcontroller boards, sensors and 3D printers etc.”

DC Patel remarking on the significance of the AIM termed that the installation of the ATL at CSHSS as a great opportunity to realise the mission objectives in Nagaland. As of today, he said only a few schools across the country have been sanctioned to have ATLs.

While citing that Nagaland today has 4-5 lakhs unemployed youth, he held that facilities like the ATL holds promise as it would be a breeding ground for realising potential early on. Stating that without skills the chances of employment gets tougher, he said, “If you are not employed, you do not contribute to the society (which further implies) you become a liability to the state.”

He said that high school is a time for young minds to decide and determine their future and urged the students to take advantage of the facilities provided.

CSHSS Board Chairman, Dr. Sashimeren expressed confidence that the ATL will benefit not only the students of the school but also the children of the surrounding neighbourhood.
