‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ generates positive movement in Nagaland

A one day adolescence girls awareness programme took place here today under the aegis of District Education Office Kohima cum District Project Office under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) programme.  

Juliana Medom, assistant state-coordinator, State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) Nagaland spoke on Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP). She said the nationwide Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme has generated positive movement even in Nagaland. The overall goal of BBBP scheme is to celebrate the girl child, ensure her protection, and enable her education and her participation in the society.  

The speaker strongly felt that teachers need to build up school friendly environment for adolescence girls and stressed on the need to create position attitude in the minds of the adolescence girls. Stating that they need support, encouragement and guidance, she also told the teachers/parents to encourage children to dream big and set a healthy goal to them.  

She said one need to avail the services of Women Helpline- 181, Sakhi-One Stop Centre and Mahila Shakti Kendra. Women Helpline 181 is intended to provide 24/7 toll free, immediate and emergency response to women affected by violence through referral, and to provide information about women related government schemes and programmes through a single uniform number 181.  

Sakhi-One Stop Centre which is meant to provide integrated support and assistance to women affected by violence, by facilitating immediate, emergency and non-emergency access to a range of services including medical, legal, psychological and counseling support under one roof.  

Mahila Shakti Kendra scheme will aim to provide interface for rural women to approach the government for availing their entitlements and for empowering them through awareness generation, training and capacity building.  

Vitsino Iralu also spoke at the programme. The function was chaired by Kepelhuzo Terhiija, assistant District Education Officer Kohima while of thanks was proposed by Piholi Swunetho, District Education Officer Kohima.
