
Kohima, April 25 (MExN): The Chakhesang Commercial Driver’s Union Kohima (CCDUK) thanked the state government, NGOs, churches, civil societies and individuals for providing relief to the daily wage earner and drivers and also appreciated the government’s effort on complete Lockdown in the state in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.
On the other hand, the Union stated that the strict imposition on ‘home confinement’ has caused immense hardship specially to the private commercial vehicle drivers as most of those drivers are just like those daily wage earners/ laborers who live hand to mouth.
The CCDUK observed that the monthly salary of one local taxi/zonal taxi drivers is usually between Rs.4000 to Rs.5000 per month while the Mini Bus/Tata Mobile Drivers are getting Rs.5000 to Rs.6000 per month and the Tata/Truck Drivers are usually getting around Rs. 7000 to Rs.8000/- per month.
The Union also stated that most of those drivers are living in a rented house and many of them are married and have children who are solely depend on their salary.
“As we all know that nowadays it is very difficult to maintain a family with this small amount of money (salary) so some of their family members are even force to go for daily wages. Therefore this Driver’s found itself standing between the race of hunger and virus which hunger seems closure.
“Foreseeing the condition of this driver’s particularly in Kohima and Nagaland as a whole, the Union would like to appeals the state government to give a serious concern on the condition of the private commercial vehicle drivers in the state as they have no person/body to look for help in this critical situation,” CCDUK president Zapove Sakha and general secretary Vekuvoyi Lohe stated in a press release.
