Kohima, December 19 (MExN): Promoting sustainable livelihoods, the Chakhesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS), Pfutsero, in partnership with the North East Initiative Development Agency, Kohima (NEIDA) – an initiative of Tata Trusts, has been taking up projects in Agriculture, Horticulture, Piggery, and Community Institution Building, covering 25 villages across Kikruma, Chizami and Pfutsero Blocks in Phek district.
As part of the project, a Drip Irrigation system was launched on December 13 at Tsupfume Village during which Vechulo-u Kanuo, Executive Director CWWS, exhorted farmers to take maximum advantage of the project.
She asserted that as small holding farmers, the only economic breakthrough that a farmer can envisage is through optimal utilization of the resources available. Imnashin Jamir, Senior Project Associate NEIDA, stressed that efficiency in water management can go a long way in achieving desirable market sources and benefits.
Earlier in November, the CWWS organized a One Day Farmers and Service Providers Interface to facilitate a common platform for farmers and relevant government and financial institutions at Chakhesang Mission Center Church, T. Chikri, Pfutsero during which farmers shared suggestions and also discussed issues and concerns.
During the programme, 6 best Agriculture Service Providers (ASP), 6 best Livestock Service Providers, 4 Best Local Resource Persons and 10 best progressive farmers under Piggery and Agriculture were given awards.
The CWWS and NEIDA also organized a Pig Health Camp in 18 villages under Phek District from October 30 to November 4. In total, 713 pigs were vaccinated with Classical Swine Fever vaccine and over 821 pigs were treated for various common animal ailments.
The CWWS has also introduced Artificial Insemination of pigs in Phek district under the technical support of International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Guwahati. This ongoing pilot project has covered 21 breeder sows against the target of 125 pigs. The projects being undertaken by the CWWS are funded by Tata Trusts and supported by Government of Nagaland.
