The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) today alleged that there has been a drastic change in the demography in the Rajabala assembly constituency while also adding about the presence of dual voters in the area.
In a complaint to the deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills (WGH), vice president of AHAM, Georgeprince Ch Momin said that there has been colossal growth of ‘non-indigenous’ voters in Rajabala assembly constituency when compared to ‘indigenous ones’ and this was a matter of concern.
“This drastic change has taken place in the last decade and calls for an alert to the state machinery to uphold democracy. Comparisons of the electoral data every decade since the statehood of Meghalaya shows that the constituency of Rajabala has witnessed excessive growth of non-tribal voters,” alleged Georgeprince.
AHAM felt that illegal immigration, as the area is close to the Indo-Bangladesh border, was the reason for the manifold increase.
“Illegal settlers took advantage of the system’s lacunae and got themselves registered as voters of the Republic of India. There is also the existence of dual voters in the area as it borders Assam and most of the population have two voter ID cards,” he added.
AHAM felt the presence of dual voters was a threat to the Constitution and the nation as well.
He further urged the DC to take up the matter and ensure systems are in place to check influx and safeguard the interest of the ‘indigenous people.’
