DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 15 (MExN): The Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) Lucknow recently organized a seminar on Lemongrass cultivation at Chepoketa Village, aimed at empowering local farmers with knowledge and skills to harness the potential of this versatile herb.
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is an aromatic herb known for its numerous culinary, medicinal, and industrial applications. Recognizing its significant economic and health benefits, CIMAP Lucknow took the initiative to educate and create awareness among the farming community in Chepoketa Village.
The seminar, held on September 8, saw participation from farmers supported by the Village Council. The event featured experts such as Manoj Kumar Yadav, Technical Officer of CIMAP Lucknow and Research Associates from CIMAP Lucknow - Vipin Kumar and Ravi Prakash Verma, who shared their extensive knowledge and practical insights on Lemongrass cultivation.
Key topics covered during the seminar included ‘Introduction to Lemongrass: Understanding the botanical characteristics and various varieties of Lemongrass;’ ‘Cultivation Techniques: In-depth guidance on soil preparation, planting, spacing, and irrigation practices for optimal Lemongrass growth;’ ‘Pest and Disease Management: Effective strategies to safeguard Lemongrass crops from common pests and diseases;’ ‘Harvesting and Post-Harvest Handling: Techniques for harvesting Lemongrass at the right maturity and preserving its essential oils for maximum value;’ and ‘Market Opportunities: Insights into local and global market trends, value addition, and the potential for income generation through Lemongrass farming.’
Manoj Kumar Yadav expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, "CIMAP is committed to supporting sustainable agricultural practices and empowering local communities through knowledge dissemination. The seminar concluded with a pledge by CIMAP Lucknow to continue supporting the local farming community in their Lemongrass cultivation journey. Participants were encouraged to apply the knowledge gained to enhance their agricultural practices and improve their livelihoods.
