Day Care Centre at ICH Mkg inaugurated

Impur, April 15 (MExN): The Principal Director, Health & Family Welfare Department Dr. Sukhato A Sema in the presence of Senti Ao Secretary to the Government of Nagaland inaugurated the Day Care Centre under National Mental Health Programme at Impur Christian Hospital Mokokchung on April 15.   The prevalence of mental disorders in the Country is 6-7% for common mental disorders and 1-2% for severe mental disorders while the rate of psychiatric disorders in children aged between 4 to 16 years is about 12% and nearly one-third of the population is less than 14 years of age.   With such a magnitude of mental disorders it becomes necessary to promote mental health services for the well being of general population, in addition to provide treatment for mental illnesses. In view of chronic nature of mental illness; socialization, work and work habits are severely impaired. As a result, the affected person requires resocialisation process, where his life skills need to be re-instilled.  

The Principal Director stated that this type of Centre will not only cater to the needs of recovering psychiatric patients but also those in need of psychiatric counselling wherein they will be motivated and encouraged to develop lost skills, so as to become a functional member of society. Similar Centres will be established across the State under NMHP in phase manner.   With such a magnitude of mental disorders it becomes necessary to promote mental health services for the well being of general population, in addition to provide treatment for mental illnesses. Treatment gap for severe mental disorders is approximately 50% and in case of Common Mental Disorders it is over 90%. This was stated in a press release issued by Impur Christian Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Bendang Ao.
