Dimapur: ‘Churches should give awareness on menace of single-use plastics’

Dimapur, July 19 (MExN): “Since churches play a vital role in Nagaland in all spheres of life, churches should give awareness to the masses to control the menace of single-use plastics.” This was suggested by the Deputy Commissioner Dimapur Sachin Jaiswal, IAS during a meeting of the District Task Force and NGOs, Civil Societies, DMC and GBs was held at DC conference hall, Dimapur on July 19. According to a DIPR report, the meeting was held to reiterate ban on single-use plastics. 

The DC stated that if the wholesaler/shopkeepers discourage the customers from using single-use plastics by giving them alternative such as cloth bags on nominal cost, it could help reduce the plastic menace. 

During the meeting, the DMC Administrator suggested having public awareness programme and also that alternatives should be made available in the market. The GBs federation suggested to pass an order from DC and DMC offices to empower the colony GBs and council to check the menace of plastic while DUCCF suggested all manufacturing units, factories and wholesalers involve in single-use plastics be banned immediately.

Penalities for defaulter 

The house decided that reports on daily activities by the ULB on single-use plastics will be submitted to the higher authority. Henceforth, incase of delinquent shopkeepers, penalities of Rs 2000 for first offense, Rs 5000 for second offense and Rs 10,000 with cancellation of Trade License for third offense will be imposed.

It was also decided to form a five number ‘Vigilance Squads’ comprising of District Administration, Police, Nagaland Pollution Control Board, Municipal and Town Council Representative, GBs representative, DUCCFs representative, Sadar village councils and GBs to strictly monitor and ensure ban on single-use plastics.
