Nagaland Chief Secretary, Temjen Toy today stated that the identity of the patient from Dimapur who tested positive for COVID-19 at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital was revealed based on the necessity for contact tracing.
Talking to a section of media persons, the Chief Secretary stated that the patient had to be named, firstly because the patient was hiding a number of things like his travel history, illness, and had gone to a private hospital without informing the authorities.
Given the fact that he is a businessman who comes in contact with numerous people, Toy said his identity had to be revealed so that all those people who came in contact with him are informed and they come forward. He also cited the case of a patient in Manipur whose identity was revealed for the same purpose.
The Chief Secretary however made clear that under ‘normal circumstances’, the identity of the patient would not be revealed in any manner.
It may be noted that the government had earlier issued a directive stating that anyone who exposes the identity of COVID-19 affected people through sharing of bio-data or photo in various print and electronic media, shall be penalized under Section 188 of Indian Penal Code 1860 (45 of 1860)
