Kohima, September 24 (MExN): The District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) in Kohima observed World Suicide Prevention Month with a series of awareness activities aimed at promoting mental well-being and preventing suicide.

Citing the International Association of Suicide Prevention, the DMHP highlighted that suicide remains a critical global public health issue, with far-reaching social, emotional, and economic consequences. It is estimated that over 720,000 suicides occur worldwide each year, with each incident profoundly affecting numerous individuals, stated a press release.

Throughout the month DMHP Kohima conducted outreach programmes and interactive sessions in schools, colleges, rehabilitation centres to spread awareness. The institutions visited included St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous) in Jakhama, Kohima College, Stella Higher Secondary School, Christ King Higher Secondary School, the College of Nursing at NHAK, and the Youth Mission Rehabilitation Centre in Seikhazou.

The sessions were led by a team of experts featuring Ruokuotuonuo Rutsa, a Clinical Psychologist, Veronica Nriame, a Psychiatric Social Worker, and Kethozenuo Mere, a Psychiatric Nurse. They addressed audiences on the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” which focuses on shifting discussions from shame and stigma to those centred on compassion, hope, and prevention.

Key topics covered included myths and facts about suicide, recognizing warning signs, identifying risk factors, and addressing stigma and discrimination. Activity-based sessions were also held to help participants develop effective stress management techniques and enhance coping skills.

The DMHP Clinical Psychologist also participated in an interactive session on All India Radio's Akash Vani on September 10, observed as World Suicide Prevention Day.
