Farm in Changtongya to conserve endangered wild fruits and plants

Mokokchung, January 15 (MExN): A farm that grows indigenous wild fruits that the Ao Nagas used to savor from ancient times was inaugurated by the Aruju Tsuki Bachelor’s Dormitory on January 6 at Changtongya Village, Mokokchung.

“This will be a farm to conserve rare endangered wild fruits which will benefit not only the environment but the researchers in the near future. It also has medicinal plants that were and are still used by the Ao Nagas locally,” Sentirenba, Founder and Director of Aruju Tsuki-Bachelor's Dormitory stated in a press release on Friday.

According to him, the farm was started and cultivated without any help from the government so as to promote self reliance in the society.

With the aim of ‘self reliance and independence’, the farm was inaugurated “without having any Chief Guest,” Sentirenba added.

Some plants in the farm have reportedly withered as a result of replanting and some were destroyed by animals. “Therefore we are planning to replace and replant them which will be done by 2021 and currently there are more than 54 plants. Some plants and trees that were planted during the initial years have started to bear fruits but it might take some more 5 to 10 years for all of them to bear fruits,” he shared.

Interested scholars who wish to visit the farm have been invited to contact the group via email-arujutsukibachelorsdormitory@gmail.com.

Meanwhile, the Aruju Tsuki Bachelor’s Dormitory group has also built a Morung, where ancient artifacts of the Ao Nagas are being kept as a way to preserve culture and tradition. No special or chief guest was invited for the inaugural function of the Morung as well and the same will be practiced in the future activities too, the group’s Advisor, S T Yapang Lkr said.
