Dimapur | October 16
The Food Safety Commissioner (FSC), Nagaland, I. Himato Zhimomi has directed the Food Safety on Wheels team under the Chief Medical Officer, Dimapur to conduct test on a consignment of fish from Andhra Pradesh scheduled to reach Dimapur on October 17.
It further directed all designated officers to maintain vigil on formalin-laced fish entering the markets and take action against defaulters.
The state government on June 22 banned storage, distribution or sale of fresh fish products including Crustaceans treated with formalin or other forms of preservatives in Nagaland for 3 months or till corrective measures are taken. The ban, affected after formalin was detected in fresh fish sold in the market, was extended for 3 more months in September.
According to local fish traders, the bulk of Nagaland’s ‘fresh’ fish imports come from the mainland, mostly from Andhra Pradesh, and some from Assam and Kolkata. Before the ban, some 20-30 tonnes of fish reached Dimapur by road daily.
Wednesday’s test would determine whether any remedial measures were taken by the fish producers and distributors.
