Former Minister Therie alleges MLAs are ‘threatening’ ULB candidates

DIMAPUR, JUNE 21 (MExN): Former Finance Minster, K Therie today alleged that “many MLAs are threatening ULB candidates and the public with a biased mindset to deprive development and facilities,” and urged the State Election Commission to “caution desperate ULB election campaigners.”

A press release from the former Minister and former NPCC President said “it is prudent for the members, especially the ruling members, to define their responsibilities to self and act accordingly.”

“The very meaning of legislator signifies making laws for people's welfare. The Government is for the welfare of the people. It is wrong to be owned by a political party. The Constitution and laws apply to all citizens. Thus, it means that tax is levied upon all and so, the benefits of various schemes by the govt are for all,” he stated.

Therie added that in a democracy, one may be elected by a party ticket based on the election manifesto. However, he noted that the “manifesto is not for a particular party, it is for all the citizens.” “What is provided by the Constitution cannot be deprived to any bona fide citizen. Such insensible leaders attract legal action, the public should reject them in future in the interest of peace, justice, and equality,” he stated.

He added that campaigns are “turning ugly,” and urged that “misuse of power and intimidation should be stopped.” The MLAs, he stated, “need to be told of their limits and duties.” He meanwhile appealed to voters to do what is morally right for the people. “Be sensible and make mature and appreciable decisions to elect capable leaders in the upcoming ULB election,” Therie urged.
