Dimapur, December 21 (MExN): Four tribal student bodies have written to the Nagaland Chief Minister, seeking review of the state government’s Backward Tribe Reservation Policy.
While acknowledging the state government for reserving a set percentage of opportunities in the government sector to bring underprivileged tribes at par with the other tribes, the representation stated that the government has failed to rationalize and provide proportionate reservation.
“We feel that it is pertinent for the state government to review the Backward Tribe Reservation Policy periodically to address anomalies and discrepancies with the change of time,” stated the representation which was appended by Presidents of the Chakhesang Students’ Union, Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Pochury Students’ Union and Kiphire-Tuensang District Sumi Students’ Union.
“We are not opposed to any just and reasonable decision made by the state government to uplift the condition of the under-privileged tribes, however, any piecemeal solution made by the government by succumbing to pressure without considering the overall ground realities of the other tribes will never be accepted,” the representation stated.
Further stating that all the backward tribes should be treated with the same yardstick, it requested the state government to thoroughly review the reservation policy. “However, if the State Government is not in the position to totally review the existing policy, it will be best to maintain the present reservation status quo in all the three-tier governmental exams,” it added.
