Here are some of the readers’ suggestions to the question: What policy decisions and concrete steps are required to stop the declining forest cover in Nagaland?

•    It is not enough to do tree plantation because a lot of trees that are planted are not looked after and it goes waste. The government must include villages and communities in devising a strategy for afforestation and take strong steps against deforestation. The amount of deforestation that is going on shows that a lot of politicians and powerful people are involved in cutting down of trees. Action must be taken against illegal logging.

•    Many tribal people are losing their forests and natural resources to logging companies. A comprehensive policy must be introduced to stop this menace. One practical step is to completely ban the export of raw timber out of Nagaland. Only finished products of timber should be allowed outside of our state. The timber must first be converted into furniture, planks and other finished wood products to be ready for export from Nagaland. This will create employment opportunities and also the value earned from the timber will benefit the people and community.

•    Planting trees are not sufficient. When we look at the number of trees planted in the last many years, we should be having forests by now. Just planting trees will not do. It has to be backed up by policy decision and a strategic plan to revive forests in Nagaland.

•    Any policy decisions and concrete steps are useless in Nagaland.

•    Cut one, plant three.

•    Push very sternly towards bamboo as an alternative.

•    The most possible and effective measure is promoting the importance of solar power plants.

•    Should stop shifting cultivation and adopt terrace cultivation.

•    Ban logging business/cancel all mills permit with immediate effect. Violators can be awarded with a heavy fine plus vigorous imprisonment. 2. Forest areas must be encouraged to preserve either with individual owner or with communities 3. Not introduce any new plants or crops to the cultivators by the allied departments which destroy biodiversity. 4. Adequate grants or loans to be given to any village or group of individuals which promotes forest regenerations.

•    Free LPG gas is not reaching to the deserving family, need to check that, because consumption of firewood is highest in rural areas, plus LPG agency need to reach every rural areas. 2. Terrace cultivation cannot be emphasized as many Naga villages are located in hilly areas. 3. Quantity of BPL distribution should increase to the deserving family to meet the consumption of family. Problem solved.

•    Not being so stringy to invest money in the work of wildlife and forest conservation will really help especially in rural areas. Forget about towns and cities, we don't have forest/ green cover/ topography in urban areas. Government should take up, initiate and approved some funds for the maintenance and conservation of forest cover in the rural areas. So far we notice, citizens from villages’ only make effective laws for forest conservation though they are not given any funds from the government and some NGOs does. If Government is really concerns about forest and its wild life, they should grand enough financial asset to the areas where it needs/ deserve to be. Hope Government not being so corrupted, bias comes up with such solution in the state.

•    Urbanisation and consequent expansion means it is inevitable forest cover will decline. Henceforth, the government can demarcate certain areas as “Lungs” areas of our state and be strict that it cannot be encroached upon or urban expansion will not foray into it. Also such “Lungs” area should be kept in its pristine form to the extent of not planting exotic trees or releasing exotic wild animals.

•    Motivate villagers with programs educating them with long term problems persisting with forest abuse, incentivise preservation, criminalize deforestation establish wood sale centers and delicence private timber sale bring it under government, fix timber price under a government program, incentivize planting trees under a state level program bring the leaders to motivate masses.

•    Obviously afforestation and social forestry. Common sense!! Even primary school students know.

•    First, cut down LPG prices. Impose strict license registration and norms on stone quarries, saw mills and stone crushers. We should also adopt three phase cutting season by dividing tree harvestable land into three phases. That way, enough time is given for the planted trees to grow into good size timbers. Government should directly buy all the timbers from the private party and sell it to the public at nominal prices. May as well introduce PPP mode.

•    Must impose a must reservation of forest per each village. That reservation includes everything starting with trees and animals and rivers.

•    Give equitable employment opportunities. In Pungro subdivision virgin forest are declining because people have to fend for themselves to survive by logging. Out of 25000 plus population, not even 2% of them are in the employment sector.

•    Don't cut trees.

•    Follow Newton thirds law of environment, plant trees every possible.

•    Build multi storey residential apartments in urban areas.
