ICAR Nagaland launches fisheries based IFS project in Changtongya

Dimapur, February 27 (MExN): The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre with its team of scientists including Dr Lohit K Baishya, Jyotish Barman and Senior Technical Assistant Meren Jamir organised an awareness-cum-launching programme of the project on ‘Promotion of Fisheries based Integrated Farming System model for livelihood improvement’ at Changtongya village on February 22. 

The programme was graced by Rorheu Peseyie, SDO(C), Changtongya sub-division along with village council chairperson, village head and prominent persons from the village, according to a press release on Sunday.

Jyotish Barman, Scientist (Fisheries) and principal investigator of the project delivered the welcome address and highlighted the objectives of the project and possible outcome envisaged by the team. In order to achieve the objectives, he urged the local people and the beneficiaries to cooperate and work with enthusiasm and dedication. 

Chairperson of Changtongya Village Council Tiasunep Longkumer expressed that the launching of the project was at the right time and adoption of integrated farming system for sustainability is the need of the hour. He assured the gathering that the team shall get full support from the villagers, the release stated. 

Principal Scientist (Agronomy) Dr Lohit K Baishya explained about various components of IFS models, resource conservation technologies, vermicompost production, piggery and poultry farming, horticultural crops, rain water harvesting and its multiple use for sustainable agricultural diversification and employment generation with special reference to the district and environment. He also requested all the farmers for their active involvement in the project with full co-operation and mutual understanding.

Meanwhile, chief guest of the function Rorheu Peseyie applauded the ICAR Nagaland centre for implementing the project in Changtongya and assured full co-operation and help to make the project successful. He also requested all the farmers to actively be involved in the programme with and also distributed various inputs like, maize seed (HQPM-5), Green gram seed (Pratap), vermibeds and fertilizers to the farmers. 

Altogether 75 persons attended the programme, the release stated.

Later, the ICAR team along with the SDO (C) visited the farmers’ fields and discussed various issues related to development of IFS model.

The ICAR Team also conducted training on ‘Promotion of Scientific Cultivation of Maize’ in Longleng involving 31 farmers. Dr Lily Ngullie, Sr Scientist and Head in-charge, KVK Longleng coordinated the training programme. Similarly, on February 25, the team conducted training on the same topic in Baghty village under Wokha district which was attended by 31 farmers. Dr Moakum Sangtam, Sr Scientist and Head in-charge, KVK Wokha coordinated the training programme. Maize seed (HQPM-5) were distributed to the farmers of both districts, the release stated.
