Medziphema, June 9 (MExN): Access to genetically pure and high-quality seed is essential for achieving better yields, improving crop performance and ensuring long-term food and nutritional security, stressed Dr H Kalita, Head of Regional Centre, ICAR Nagaland Centre, Medziphema.
Quality seed plays a pivotal role as the foundation of a productive and resilient agricultural system, he added while addressing a farmer training programme on “Quality Seed Production of Rice” organised by the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region at Singrijan Village, Chümoukedima, on June 9, 2026.
Stressing the importance of farmer-led seed enterprises, Dr Kalita also encouraged the development of decentralised seed production systems at the village level to strengthen local seed availability, reduce dependence on external sources and facilitate the wider adoption of improved crop varieties.
During the technical session, Scientist Dr Harendra Verma provided an overview of scientific rice seed production practices. He emphasised the role of certified seed in maintaining varietal purity, ensuring seed health and maximising yield potential.
Referring to seven improved rice breeding lines recently developed for Nagaland's agro-climatic conditions, Dr Verma informed participants that the varieties offer higher yield potential, wider adaptability and improved tolerance to major biotic and abiotic stresses.
The training covered key aspects of quality seed production, including varietal selection, maintenance of isolation distance, rouging for genetic purity, seed treatment, integrated nutrient management, pest and disease management, field inspection standards, harvesting, post-harvest handling, processing and scientific storage techniques. Participants were also sensitised to maintaining quality standards throughout the seed production chain.
According to an ICAR release, 30 farmers and officials from the State Agriculture Department attended the programme and participated in discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions.
The programme concluded with the distribution of seeds of improved rice varieties to participating farmers to support on-farm adoption and promote quality seed production in the region, it added.
