SHILLONG, February 17 (NNN): The much awaited Indo-Bangla border fencing work has finally begun in the Meghalaya stretch of the International border.
“Levelling work for the fencing has started in some areas while land acquisition in certain areas is going on,” informed a BSF official.
Although decided decades ago, the issue was marred with controversies and objections from several quarters. A Coordination Committee on International Border (CCIB) comprising of land owners and social organisations was also formed.
Acknowledging that the progress of the work is slow, he however informed that work is progressing and will continue.
For years now, landowners and social organisations under the umbrella of the Coordination Committee on International Border have opposed fencing of the border areas.
They have been demanding re-demarcation of the international border from the zero line so that the villagers do not lose out on the land.
