There is an urgent need for bridging the gap between the general public and information technology in our state and the government is going all out to bridge this need for information technology considering the fact that almost 60% of the Nagas does not give much importance to information technology.

The recent floating of tenders which came out in Nagaland Post dated the 19th June 2009 titled ‘All Government Offices to be linked with Secretariat’ is a welcome sign of the initiative taken up by the Nagaland State E-Governance Society (NSeGS), Department of Information Technology and Technical Education (DOITTE) Government of Nagaland which is the major trustee of Naga SWAN (state wide area network connection). Nagaland Government is working to bridge the educated unemployed youth to this technology and its importance, which will enable our state to compete with other states.

The department of Information Technology & Technical Education, Government of Nagaland is taking positive steps towards bridging the digital divide by taking a leap in its quest for e-governance with the much envisaged State Wide Area Network (SWAN) project. The launching of this project is taking a leap to link all the government offices, district headquarters and all the block headquarters and the State Data Centre Network Operation centre with the state Secretariat for bridging the rural divide and focusing on development technologies that will enable the people and the various departments to interact through the much awaited technology which is believed to bear surprising results in the future.

The present government has taken a serious approach on the issue of technological difference with the other advanced states on the art of information technology, which has been vigorously working on tapering this divide, which is one of the major factors today stunting the growth of this important technology. The state can only benefit when this digital revolution would not divide into information rich and information poor. The advantages of this technology can be able to connect all the remote parts of our state where the internet and e-governance can result in less telecom/travelling cost through the use of video conference with reliable communication corridors within the state administration and make government more productive and compatible through electronic transaction. E-Governance can bring government more closer to the rural public to educate and provide more efficient services. Moreover other projects are also needed in a wider circle all through out the district and not limited to only certain areas.

Nagaland has still miles to go before the digital revelation can really benefit our people but the going is strong and tough, our state is not hiding under the table any more but awakening to a new growth with new development with oriented leaders paving the way for a brighter and stronger Nagaland, for new routes are built not over old routes but alongside with.
