Kohima, May 26 (MExN): The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the prevailing law and order situation in the district were among the key focus areas at the monthly District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) meeting of Kohima held on May 26.
The meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner and Vice-Chairman DPDB Kohima, B Henok Buchem, also discussed the upcoming blood donation campaign, water supply issues, approved the introduction of new streams in Government Higher Secondary Schools (GHSSs), and felicitated an HSLC topper.
Presenting the process and timeline for the SIR exercise, Assistant Electoral Officer (AEO) Kohima Chisho K Swu informed the board that the district has 189 polling stations across six Assembly Constituencies, including three newly recognised polling stations added last year.
He said the revision exercise was necessitated due to rapid urbanisation, migration, multiple entries, and concerns regarding the quality of electoral rolls.
According to the AEO, the qualifying date for the revision is October 1, 2026, while house-to-house verification by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will be conducted from August 6 to September 14.
The draft electoral roll will be published on September 28 and the final roll on November 22.
Swu informed that around 79.44 per cent mapping with the 2005 electoral roll has been achieved so far.
Electors who cannot be linked with the 2005 roll would be issued hearing notices for verification of eligibility, he added.
The AEO also clarified that Aadhaar would only serve as proof of identity and not as proof of citizenship, address, or date of birth, while assuring that no eligible voter would be left out of the electoral roll.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (Sr SP) Kohima Krodi Rhetso also briefed the board on the law and order situation in the district.
He said Kohima, being the state capital, faces unique security challenges due to the presence of various criminal elements.
The Sr SP informed that police recently arrested several anti-social elements and are closely monitoring illegal activities, including reports of illegal taxation in Kohima town.
On the Manipur situation, he said many heavy vehicles remain stranded along National Highway-2 and informed that police personnel have been deployed to ensure the safety of stranded drivers.
He further appealed to the public and media to refrain from spreading provocative messages on social media that could disturb peace and harmony in the district.
On the education front, District Education Officer Kohima Emilo Patton presented a report on the introduction of the Arts stream at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Kigwema and the Science stream at GHSS Jotsoma.
The board decided to recommend the introduction of the respective streams after finding that both schools fulfilled the required criteria.
