Mon, November 20 (MExN): The Konyak Union (KU) has once again raised concern over what it described as the “ever-mounting disturbances” and illegal activities affecting the public and business community in Mon district.
In a statement, the KU said it has received multiple complaints regarding illegal extortion and forceful demands imposed on business establishments, including suppliers and transporters ferrying goods from Assam to Mon.
It also cited reported instances of coercion on village councils for financial contributions and livestock. The Union further noted demands for percentage cuts from contractors undertaking public developmental works, practices it cautioned would compromise the quality of projects in the district.
Issuing a stern warning, the KU said that any individual, group, or faction involved in such activities must desist immediately “lest stringent action is initiated.” It stated that, if required, the names of those involved would be publicly disclosed.
Reiterating its earlier stand, the Union also urged all Naga Political Groups (NPGs) to cease loitering with arms and uniform within Mon district.
Calling for responsibility from leadership across NPGs, the KU appealed to “higher authorities of all regions” to instruct their members to exercise restraint and refrain from “unwanted activities” that threaten community well-being and hinder economic growth and entrepreneurship in the district.
Such activities had become intolerable for the public, the Union stated in a press release issued by its President, K Yamao Konyak, and General Secretary, Wango Konyak.
The Union expressed optimism that collective leaders of all groups share a common goal of fostering and protecting community peace and development “within the realm of Nagaland for Christ,” rather than overshadowing the region’s development through their activities.
Further, the KU said it has authorised police and law-enforcing agencies to take action and book any individual involved in such activities as per the law of the land.
