Longleng, June 6 (MExN): LEMSACHENLOK, in collaboration with the Longleng Forest Division and hosted by the Hükphang Village Council, observed World Environment Day 2026 on June 5 under the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” bringing together government officials, researchers, academicians, conservation partners, village councils and students to reaffirm commitment to biodiversity conservation, climate action and sustainable development.
A major highlight of the programme was the formal launch of several conservation and rural innovation initiatives, the Rural Innovative Grain Storage (Mini Silo), the LEMSACHENLOK website, and the Biodiversity Peace Corridor & Trans-Border Corridors Digitalized Web Portal. Research collaboration partnerships were also formally launched at the event.
The programme further witnessed the recognition of two outstanding AlijoCademia (Traditional Learning Centres) and the declaration of the LEMSACHENLOK Local Initiatives Global Impact (LIGI) Awards 2026, first edition for the Best Community Conservation Areas.
The event was graced by Prof Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University; W Manpai Phom, NCS, Deputy Commissioner, Longleng; and Dr Suresh Chand, Scientist-E, Zoological Survey of India. Miss Phom 2025, Chungai Longkonglee, also made a special appearance.
Addressing the gathering, dignitaries underscored the importance of collective action in addressing climate change, conserving biodiversity, and promoting sustainable livelihoods. They called for strengthening partnerships among local communities, government agencies, academic institutions, and conservation organisations to build a more resilient and sustainable future.
The event featured presentations on environmental stewardship, ecosystem restoration, and community-led conservation initiatives. A thematic play presented by Hükphang AlijoCademia, reflecting the World Environment Day theme, and a folk dance by Hükphang Shoh-um, showcasing the community’s rich cultural heritage, were among the highlights of the cultural segment.
Plantation and Exhibition
The celebration concluded with the distribution of native tree saplings, ceremonial plantation activities, and the inauguration of Community Conserved Area (CCA) and AlijoCademia stalls exhibiting local innovative skills, crafts, and conservation efforts.
