Manipur records sudden jump in TPR to 6.3% after COVID-19 restriction lifted

Three days after lifting all the COVID-19 restrictions, Manipur on Sunday recorded a sudden jump in the daily test positivity rate (TPR) of COVID-19 when it touched 6.3%.

Of the 223 samples tested in the last 24 hours, 14 cases of COVID-19 were detected with 6.3% TPR, an official bulletin of the state Health department said.

Restrictions like mass gathering, meetings, social distancing, wearing masks at public places etc. were imposed in the state since the COVID-19 spread in the state two years ago. The restrictions imposed under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 were extended from time to time and the latest extension order was issued on January 29. However, the Manipur government had on March 31 ordered lifting all the restrictions imposed under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 with effect from April 1.

On the first day of the lifting of the restriction, the state recorded 10 COVID-19 cases with 3.5% TPR even as it was dipped again on the next day. On Saturday, the state reported only one case with 0.35% TPR.

However, the daily surge of 14 cases was reported on Sunday with 6.3% TPR. The 14 fresh cases were detected upon testing of 223 samples in the last 24 hours, the bulletin said. This led to a rise in the active cases to 41 as only four persons were discharged upon recovery on the day. The active cases dipped to 31 on the previous day (Saturday).

Meanwhile, after adding the fresh cases reported today, the infection tally of the state rose to 1,37,119. The recovery tally also surged to 1,34,958 after adding the four discharges, taking the recovery rate to 98.43%.

The fatality toll remained at 2,120 as no death related to COVID-19 was reported today for the 17th consecutive day.

District fresh infection data showed four new cases in Imphal West, three in Imphal West, two each in Bishnupur, Churachandpur and Kakching districts and one case in Noney district.

Meanwhile, only 250 persons were vaccinated against COVID-19 in the state on Saturday, taking the overall coverage by the vaccine in the state so far to 27,91,776.

So far, a total of 11,83,468 people have been fully vaccinated with first and second doses in the state while 15,41,950 persons have received the first dose.

The number of persons who have received the precaution dose in the state also rose to 66,358, according to the daily report of the state Health department.
