Massive verification drive in Imphal localities to check entry of Rohingyas

Newmai News Network Imphal | September 26   As a part of various measures to prevent fleeing Rohingyas entering Manipur and also to keep in check the rising cases of bomb blast, especially in Imphal areas, massive verification drives were carried out in several places of Imphal this morning. Police said that as many as 46 persons including 10 women have been picked up from Mantripukhri areas of Imphal East district by police for further verification.   The verification drives were carried out simultaneously at Mantripukhri localities in Imphal East district and Keishampat areas in Imphal west district which began at 4 am.   Police said that around 1850 persons including 950 women were verified in today’s drives. Later, police picked up 46 persons and handed over to the Heingang police station for further verifications.   The search operations at Mantripuhri areas were conducted under the command of ASP (LO/OPS) Wungpam Kasar, DSP CDO Robinson Khamnam, DSP (Ops) RK Saklemba, SDPO (PRT) Shankerjit, SDPO (LLI) Bishorjit, OC-CDO Imphal East Lunthang Vaiphei and other OC including Women Police Station.   Regarding the Keishampat areas, police personnel from Imphal west district carried out the drive at Aheibam Leikai and Keishampat Laishom Leikai. The drives were headed by Imphal West (Ops) Deputy SP Thangkhochon Haokip under the supervision of Imphal West (ops) Additional SP N Nimai.   A few days ago, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had stated that the State Government had put security forces on alert at border areas especially at Moreh, Jiribam and Behiang to check illegal entry of fleeing Rohingyas into Manipur.   Assam Rifles, State security forces and other security agencies have been keeping vigil at the 'unfenced' areas of Indo-Myanmar border, the Chief Minister had stated. Arrested refugees, if any, would be handed over to the Central Government authority for deportation, Biren had said.   It can be noted here that the Manipur police personnel, Assam Rifles and other security agencies are carrying out intense vigil along Manipur-Myanmar border areas, and also along Jiribam areas bordering Silchar in Assam. These security forces are carrying out massive drives identifying people by checking their identity cards and other related documents, according to reports.   Ever since the Rohingya issue cropped up in neighbouring Myanmar, security forces have been exercising extra measures of frisking people in all the entry points in Moreh area of Tengnoupal district bordering Myanmar.
