Newmai News Network Shillong | June 20 The Meghalaya police have arrested one person for allegedly posting posting inflammatory materials on social media. The accused, identified as one Manbhalang Nongspung has been remanded in judicial custody after a case under section 153/153(A)/506/505/507 IPC was registered against him in the cyber crime police station, special superintendent of police, CID SP R Muthu said. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the SP also informed that so far nine cases have been registered in the cyber crime police station, and are currently under investigation. “Many others have been summoned for questioning in the above cases and due legal action will be taken against those who have infringed upon the laws of the land,” he said. Muthu said that the cyber crime wing of the Meghalaya police is actively monitoring the posts on social media which are offensive, inflammatory and derogatory. He also said that such posts are liable to legal action as per the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, The Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 and Indian Penal Code. Meanwhile, the police have also appealed to all citizens to refrain from posting any offensive and inflammatory materials on social media as legal action will be taken against those behind such posts. The SP further stated that administrators of social media groups are to ensure that no offensive material is posted by members of the group as these are liable to legal action. “The administrators are also requested to inform police and cyber crime wing if any such material is posted on their group,” he added.
