With Mokokchung being declared the “cleanest city” in North East India in the 25000 to 50000 population category as announced by the Government of India’s Swachh Survekshan 2020 survey, The Morung Express interviewed some of its citizens for their comments and the most common response drawn was that the town’s people now ought to “live up to its reputation.”

Another common response was that the town should now focus on framing progressing and innovative policies to retain the “cleanest city” tag.

Meanwhile, ADC Mokokchung and Administrator of Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC), Shashank Pratap Singh said that the accolade won today was a result of the collective effort of all the citizens.

He also appreciated the role of the Ward authorities under the municipality, staff of MMC and its sanitation workers and the district administration.

Singh, who assumed the chair of MMC administrator earlier this month, added that all credit goes to his predecessor Manphai Phom.

On being asked about MMC’s plans from now on, he said that there were “lots of things to do” but the immediate goal was to seek government assistance for establishing a waste recycling plant in Mokokchung.

Chairman of Mokokchung Swachh Bharat Mission, MB Longkumer also showered praises on the MMC for their dedicated service. He also noted that mass public participation was critical. He also thanked the NGOs, district administration, police and ward authorities for their participation and contribution towards a clean Mokokchung.
