According to the Union Minister of Communications and Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya Scindia, Nagaland has far lot more to offer than meets the eye. “There is much more to Nagaland that needs to be not only experienced, but needs to be lived and discovered… don't limit Nagaland only to the Hornbill Festival,” Scindia told the media on his way out to Delhi, at the Dimapur airport on December 6, following a 3-day visit to Kohima.

He made mention of Nagaland coffee as one product that caught his attention. The quality of the coffee beans he saw, the packaging and branding, according to him, was “nothing short of world-class.”

He referred to the state government picking coffee as one of state’s unique selling propositions (USP), adding, “And so, we are working on a project with regard to coffee.” With an estimated 11,000 hectares under coffee plantation, he said that the focus is on value-addition with the establishment of a common processing centre that would further enhance the income of growers. As per Scindia, the Union Commerce and DoNER Ministries are reportedly taking serious focus on the state’s coffee.

He described his stay as an “amazing experience” during which he met traditional artisans, participated in an Angami traditional stone-pulling ceremony in Touphema village, and witnessed the Hornbill Festival at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama. He said, “The potential that Nagaland has in its people, in its rich culture, in its rich heritage, is something that the world must be aware of and the world must come and experience.”

A scheduled visit to the Heirloom Naga Centre in Sovima, Chümoukedima, on December 6, was cancelled.
