Authorities of the Assam Kaziranga University in Jorhat have reported that a Naga B.Tech Civil Engineering student has issued a public apology after remarks he made triggered widespread resentment among Assamese students and members of the public.
According to an incident report made available during a media briefing by Nagaland’s Higher Education and Tourism Minister Temjen Imna Along in Kohima on Sunday, the student, while returning to the hostel, was unable to find transportation and, upon reaching the hostel, expressed his frustration before his roommates about the non-availability of vehicles. During this outburst, he made remarks perceived as offensive by Assamese students because they were related to the late singer Zubeen Garg. Some students recorded his remarks and circulated the video on social media, which led to widespread resentment both on and off campus.
The report further stated that a group of students from outside Assam Kaziranga University, along with some outsiders, subsequently entered the campus forcibly and attempted to create unrest at Hunaru Hostel. The University authorities said the situation was brought under control through the timely intervention of the Superintendent of Police, Additional SP, ADC, Circle Officer and OIC, Pulibor, Jorhat.
They informed that the matter is presently under control but added that both students and members of the public have requested the Superintendent of Police, Jorhat to initiate strict legal action in this regard. As a precautionary measure, additional police personnel have been deployed at the University’s main gate and hostel premises to prevent any untoward incidents.
Following the incident, the student issued a public apology to the University community and to the people of Assam. In his statement, he said, “I am apologetic about my actions and conduct that had offended the sentiments of all citizens of Assam. I had no intentions of causing disrespect to the late beloved singer Zubin Garg Da. However, I am sorry to all communities of Assam. My sincere apologies to the late beloved Zubin Garg Da and his fans. I would not repeat such actions again and would apologies to you and all communities of Assam.”
The University said that the student had expressed remorse for his actions and sought forgiveness from the University community.
