
IDSP cautions against complacency, encourages COVID appropriate behavior

With the threat of a possible third wave predicted over the next two months, the COVID-19 situation in Nagaland remained fairly normal. Despite, there was an increase in hospitalizations of COVID patients over the past week, as per the state Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).
The weekly caseload dropped for the second week straight with the state reporting 145 new cases for the period October 2-8. The tally was somewhat near the totals Nagaland reported when the threat of the second wave loomed in April.
Almost a half of the week’s tally was reported from Dimapur, followed by Kohima reporting 35 and Mokokchung- 18. The cases in the other districts were in single digits with Kiphire, Peren and Zunheboto reporting nil cases.
The sample positivity rate was 2.1 percent. As per the IDSP’s weekly COVID roundup, “The weekly sample positivity rate has remained below 5 percent for the 8th consecutive week.”
Meanwhile, 191 recoveries were reported from across the state with Dimapur accounting for a 100 recoveries, Kohima- 48, Mokokchung- 21, Phek- 11, Kiphire- 5, Tuensang- 3 and 1 each in Wokha, Longleng and Peren, while Mon and Zunheboto reported nil recoveries.
There were 3 deaths (1 each in Mokokchung, Dimapur and Kohima) reported during the week. Before the second wave hit, the last time the state reported less than 5 COVID deaths in a 7-day period was in April when 1 death was reported during April 17-23.
The IDSP though reminded that an overwhelming number of COVID deaths have been observed “among the unvaccinated as 98 percent of deaths are not fully vaccinated and 89 percent have not received a single dose since the second wave.”
It added that the mortality rate among pregnant women “remains very high at 11 percent,” while stating, “None of the COVID-19 deaths among pregnant women have been found to be vaccinated.”
With 38 COVID patients requiring hospitalization during the week, the IDSP noted, “There has been a slight increase in the weekly new admissions at COVID-19 hospitals.” Dimapur reported 15 admissions, Kohima- 8, Phek- 8 and the other districts combined reported 7 admissions.
While the situation may appear normal, it cautioned against large gatherings of people and encouraged observing COVID-19 appropriate behaviors at all times.
Vaccine
The total of vaccines administered crossed the 11-lakh mark with 39,335 doses administered over the past 7 days (October 2-8). As per the IDSP, the total stood 11,02,934 doses, as on October 8. The number of eligible beneficiaries, who have received both the shots increased to 4,07,191.
