Nagaland medical fraternity calls for action against erring police personnel

Dimapur, April 20 (MExN): The Indian Dental Association, Nagaland State Branch (IDANSB) along with other organisations in the medical fraternity submitted a joint representation on Monday in connection with “the assault and torture of Dr Mongshithung Murry, a bonafide member of IDANSB by the police personnel on April 17 at Wokha.”

The representation addressed to the Chief Secretary, the Home Commissioner and the Director General of Police condemned the incident and stated that “the videographic evidence that went viral within Nagaland and across the country clearly shows that the defenceless Doctor was mercilessly assaulted.”

Stating that the assault not only caused massive injury on him, but has caused trauma to the victim and his family, including the entire medical fraternity, the IDANSB demanded that action against the erring personnel should be taken within a period of one week.

If no action is taken within one week’s time, the entire medical fraternity shall resort to cease work, it added.

The Association further stated that “the medical fraternity has had enough of the high handedness of the police personnel on duty,” and appealed to the responsible authorities to take “immediate punitive action against those erring police personnel involved, to establish trust within the professionals working together to combat the pandemic COVID-19.”

The representation appended by President and Secretary of IDANSB, State Secretary of Indian Medical Association (IMA) Nagaland State Branch, and the General Secretary of Nagaland AYUSH Doctors Association, stated that “The issue has become a larger public issue which cannot be allowed to be settled indoors.”

In this regard, we seek your prompt action to boost the morale of the medical fraternity, it added.

Lotha Doctors Forum condemn

Meanwhile, in a separate message the Lotha Doctors Forum, Wokha condemned the “violent and grievous assault” on Dr Murry and appealed that the law to “take its rightful course and those responsible be held accountable so that the trust, confidence and the co-operation of LDF and all doctors in Nagaland are restored.”

The Forum also resolved to fully support and endorse the representation given by Indian Dental Association (Nagaland Branch), Indian Medical Association (Nagaland Branch), and Nagaland Ayush Doctors Association to the Government of Nagaland.

Lotha Doctors Forum decided to wear black badge for one week to show our resentment and as a sign of protest, the press release from LDF President and General Secretary stated.
