Multiple landslides block Dimapur-Kohima highway

Landslides triggered by heavy rainfall over the past few days, halted vehicular traffic on the Dimapur-Kohima highway, NH 29, on September 14. Multiple landslides were reported on the Pagala Pahar stretch of the highway, falling in between the Chathe River Bridge and Kuki Dolong.

The NHIDCL reported landslides occurring on atleast 11 spots. The worst affected was at the vulnerable Chainage 126/080, where a segment of the road was washed away. Landslides on this particular segment of the highway recurs every monsoon. According to an NHIDCL official, its machinery was ready to begin clearing and restoration works once the rains subside.

More mudslides occurred on the Chümoukedima town-Chathe Bridge stretch and the bypass via New Chümoukedima forcing halting of vehicular movement. A wire bridge over the Chathe River connecting Chümoukedima and Seithekima was also damaged. 

The alternative 7th Mile to Mhainamtsi via Pimla route also reported a mudslide which was cleared. However, the Peren district administration issued an advisory regulating the movement of heavy and light vehicles. 

Landslide caused due to incessant rainfall blocking the road in Phek on September 14.

The status of the other alternative connecting Dimapur to Kohima— Niuland to Zhadima route remained unclear with no update or advisory from the Niuland administration. 

Multiple landslides also occurred in Kohima, Phek and Tseminyu.

Commissioner of Police Dimapur 
•    Movement of vehicles from Chathe Bridge to New Chümoukedima Bridge closed until road is restored.    

•    Alternate routes:
1. Pimla–Mhainamtsi–Jharnapani/Medziphema route:
•    Light Vehicles from 06:00 a.m.–06:00 p.m.
•    Heavy Vehicles carrying essential goods (only up to six-wheelers) Pimla–Mhainamtsi–Jharnapani–Medziphema 6:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m. w.e.f. 15.09.2025.
•    Heavy Vehicles carrying essential goods (only up to six-wheelers) Medziphema/Jharnapani–Mhainamtsi–Pimla 12:00 a.m.–6:00 a.m. w.e.f. 15.09.2025.

2. Niuland–Ghotovi–Zhadima route: for Light Vehicles.
•    Travellers and transporters requested to cooperate and follow routes and timings.

ANTA Wokha Unit 
•    Taxi operators advised to use alternate route via Wokha–Marachu (Merapani) to reach Dimapur.
•    Operators must follow RTA-approved fare rates; overcharging not tolerated.
