Nagaland: World Sight Day observance on October 10

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 7 (MExN): World Sight Day will be observed globally on October 10, 2024, marking the 25th anniversary of this important initiative. Since its inception in 2000, World Sight Day has been organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise public awareness about the prevention of eye problems and the control of curable blindness.

A press release from Dr E Phyantsuthung, State Programme Officer for the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI) under the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare, outlined this year’s focus on the importance of eye care for young people. The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) has adopted the theme “Love Your Eyes, Kids” for World Sight Day 2024, aiming to inspire children everywhere to value their eye health.

In Nagaland, eye testing facilities are accessible in all district hospitals, Community Health Centres (CHCs), and Primary Health Centres (PHCs), staffed by Para Medical Ophthalmic Assistants. Dr Phyantsuthung highlighted several key points for maintaining eye care:

•    Get your eyes tested if you experience blurred vision, unequal vision in both eyes, or persistent headaches and dizziness.

•    If you wear glasses, have them re-tested annually if under 40 years old, and every two years if over 40 (or sooner if issues arise).

•    Avoid using contact lenses without professional guidance.

•    Seek prompt medical attention for minor eye injuries.

•    Do not use eye medications without a prescription.

•    Avoid using old, expired, or previously used eye drops and ointments.

•    Use protective goggles when working with machinery such as grinders and drills.
