National Girl Child Day observed in Kohima

Kohima, January 27 (MExN): Momentum Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity Project with its empanelled NGO partner, Indian Social Responsibility Network commemorated National Girl Child Day at St Mary’s Cathedral Higher Secondary School, Kohima on January 24.

Resource person Dr Medo Keretsü, Medical Officer (RBSK) from Chief Medical Office, Kohima spoke on the significance of the day. He informed that every year on January 24, the country celebrates National Girl Child Day which is initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development to spread public awareness on issues faced by a girl child in the society.

Stressing on the importance of menstrual hygiene, Dr Keretsü said “It is an essential aspect of hygiene for women and adolescent girls between menarche and menopause. Good menstrual hygiene management plays a fundamental role in enabling women and girls to reach their full potential.”

Dr Keretsü also encouraged the students to practice good hygiene during menstruation as it is of pivotal importance which will also decrease the risk of infections.

“Poor menstrual hygiene however can pose serious health risks like reproductive and urinary tract infections and affect the well-being of students and neglecting to wash hands after changing menstrual products can spread infections,” Dr Keretsü said.

Egumsing Nsarangbe, State Project Manager, John Snow India also delivered a short speech on the importance and benefits of Covid-19 vaccination. The programme was chaired by Martha Dukru, state co-ordinator ISRN.
Altogether, 206 teenage girls attended the programme.

Similarly, National Girl Child Day was commemorated in Kiphire, Peren, Zunheboto, Tuensang, Wokha, Mon and Mokokchung. On account of the National Girl Child Day, district team visited schools and Girls Hostels and organized awareness sessions on menstrual hygiene. The team also conducted house visits and interpersonal communication with teenage girls, distributed IEC flyers and pamphlets, according to Rose, Communication Officer, John Snow India.
