Kohima, September 22 (MExN): The Nagaland Contractors’ & Suppliers’ Union (NCSU) has expressed “serious concern” over the failure of the Government of Nagaland for non-implementation of the order of the Union Ministry of Transport & Highway, Government of India regarding cancelling the work order of Maytas-Gayatri, a Hyderabad based Joint Venture (JV), for construction of various roads under SARDP-I in Nagaland. The work order was allotted to the company on February 4, 2011.
“Instead of completing the said project, Maytas-Gayatri (JV) had abruptly abandoned the construction work since 2014 while the general public of Nagaland has been facing untold hardship as the said roads are lifeline of several district headquarters,” stated a press release issued by NCSU, president, Pele Khezhie and general secretary, John Kath.
The NCSU said the union had on several occasions submitted representations urging the Ministry of Transport and Highway, Government of India to call for fresh tender for the construction of 2-lane roads in the State of Nagaland under SARDP Phase-I, i.e., Longleng-Changtongya road; Mon-Tamlu, Merangkong road; Phek-Pfutsero road and Zunheboto-Chakhabama road.
“It is known by all concerned that the NCSU had time and again reminded both Government of India and State Government for early restoration of the abandoned works and to change the modalities in awarding contract works by breaking-up into smaller projects in order to enable the local contractors to participate in the competitive bidding,” the Union stated. “As the State Government had experienced the total failure of the so-called multi-crore company Maytas & Gayatri in this project, the same fate should not be repeated in the next bidding,” it added.
The NCSU therefore urged the State Government and Ministry of Transport and Highway, Government of India to expedite the process of inviting tender for the said SARDP Phase-I project and ensure that the local contractors are eligible to get the contract works under the programme.
