Nokpu and Saring ban hunting wildlife within their jurisdiction

Mokokchung, October 6 (MExN): The Mokokchung Forest Division in collaboration with the Wildlife Division Dimapur organised a wildlife sensitisation programme under the theme ‘Partnership in Wildlife Conservation’ in observance of 69th National Wildlife Week 2023 at Saringyim village, Mokokchung on October 5. 

During the programme, Chairman, Nokpu Village Council, Lanusosang Ao highlighted the unanimous decision taken by the joint council of Nokpu and Saring to ban hunting of wildlife within their jurisdiction.

On this, a DIPR report stated that the ACF, Alemwapang Imchen commended the joint councils of Nokpu and other villages for their unwavering commitment to safeguard the natural heritage. He also urged the youth to embrace their responsibility in preserving the environment. 

Earlier, Conservator of Forest, N Senthil Kumar, IFS, who was the special guest for the programme appreciated the dedication of the joint councils to wildlife conservation and stressed the need for collaboration to protect unique ecosystems. He highlighted the significance of working together to create a synergy that can safeguard the natural world.

Wildlife Warden, Dimapur, Tokaho Kinimi, IFS emphasised the critical importance of wildlife conservation, stressing that the preservation of wildlife is now a necessity for collective survival in an era of increasing human-wildlife interaction. 

EAC Longchem, Orenthung Kikon encouraged people to cultivate a symbiotic relationship with nature and emphasized on humanity’s divine calling to nurture the earth rather than exploit it.

The programme included a general discussion wherein stakeholders shared their concerns and challenges stemming from the human-wildlife interface. The diverse opinions were also exchanged to identify the best path forward in conservation efforts.

In recognition of their commitment to environmental awareness, awards and certificates were presented to students who had participated in a nature art competition which was organised at GMS Nokpu and GHS Saring on October 4. Imkongsunep from GMS Nokpu and Imlitongzuk from GHS Saring emerged as winners. 

The programme was chaired by Deputy Ranger, Moakumdang and the vote of thanks was delivered by ACF, Moamongba. 

The Wildlife Wing of Dimapur conducted a field demonstration to educate the community on mitigating the human-elephant interface, contributing to a safer coexistence with these magnificent creatures. This event saw stakeholders, dignitaries, and the youth come together and discuss the pressing issue of human-wildlife interface.
