NSCPCR holds awareness on child rights, protection in Dimapur, Niuland

DIMAPUR/KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 19 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR), in collaboration with the respective District Child Protection Units (DCPU), organised one-day awareness programmes on “Child Rights and Child Protection” in Dimapur and Niuland on September 19 and 18 respectively.

In Dimapur, the event was held at Hotel Saramati and chaired by Chairperson of CWC Dimapur, Moamenla Yaden. Secretary, Social Welfare and NSCPCR, Yongchingkumla, delivered the welcome address, while NSCPCR Chairman, Alun Hangsing, presented the keynote address.

Deputy Commissioner Dimapur, Dr Tinojongshi Chang, NCS, emphasised the collective responsibility of safeguarding child rights and flagged concerns over child abuse, domestic violence, sexual abuse and child labour.

Resource persons highlighted provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, POCSO Act, Right to Education Act, 2009, and the Child Labour Amendment Act, 2016. DCPO Dimapur, Avika Zhimomi, reported that from September 2023 to August 2025, 310 children in need of care and protection were produced before the Child Welfare Committee, while 499 cases were reported through the Childline 1098 helpline. He noted that Dimapur’s status as a commercial hub posed unique challenges such as trafficking, abuse and abandonment. The programme concluded with an open house discussion and a vote of thanks by Project Coordinator (CHL) Dimapur, Alomi Sumi.

At Niuland, the programme was held at the Town Council Hall on September 18. Delivering the keynote address, NSCPCR Chairman, Alun Hangsing, said countries that prioritise child care are among the most advanced globally, citing European examples. Deputy Commissioner Niuland, Sara S Jamir, urged GBs, church leaders and public leaders to sensitise their areas against child labour and child marriage, which are strictly prohibited under law.

Legal Consultant, NSCPCR, Lichani Murry, elaborated on the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, and the Adoption Act, while NSCPCR Members, Aying Wangsha and Akumla Longchari, spoke on the Right to Education Act, 2009, and the POCSO Act, 2012, respectively. DCPO Niuland, Kughakali Achumi, presented a brief report on child-related cases in the district. The programme, chaired by Project Coordinator Amongla, concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Child Welfare Committee Chairman, Apolo.
