State records 29% monsoon rainfall deficiency

Kohima, September 19 (MExN): Nagaland has experienced seasonal deficiency of 29% rainfall from June 1 to September 17 but is likely to receive more precipitation in the next few days, the NSDMA said on Saturday.

“A total of 95 mm rainfall was received this month so far and appears to be the least in last many years,” the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) said in a weather forecast issued in coordination with the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati.

Among the districts, Tuensang witnessed the highest deficit at 63% followed by Wokha with 53%. The state capital Kohima saw a deficit of 33%, it stated.

However, with a strong weather system forming over Bay of Bengal on September 20, the NSDMA informed that rain activities in the State will get stepped up between September 20 to 22 and again from September 25 to 26. No extreme weather activity is expected during this period, it added.

Most of the thunderstorms and lightning accompanied with rain will happen during evening and night and the state will experience better weather conditions between 10:00 am to 5:00 pm during this period, according to the NSDMA.

The NSDMA meanwhile urged the public to exercise caution to avoid any eventualities during this period. It also requested all the District Disaster Management Authorities and other line departments who are responsible to attend to any emergencies caused by natural calamities, to be on alert to save lives and properties during this period.
