NSF calls ‘Gau Dhwaj Yatra’ an attack on Naga cultural values

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 26 (MExN): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has expressed opposition to the ‘Gau Dhwaj Yatra,’ an event promoting a nationwide ban on cow slaughter, which was scheduled for September 28 in Nagaland, but has since been cancelled. According to the NSF, the event represents an "assault" on the cultural, religious, and social values of the Naga people, deeming it an attempt to impose external beliefs on their homeland.

In a press release issued today, the NSF commended the Nagaland State Government for refusing permission to hold the event in Kohima, citing the move as a reflection of respect for the distinct customs and dietary practices of the Naga people, which are protected under Article 371A of the Indian Constitution.

Despite the state’s refusal and the NSF's clear stance, the organizers of the 'Gau Dhwaj Yatra' have chosen to proceed with the event. The NSF described this decision as a "provocation" and an "act of disrespect" not just towards the NSF but to the entire Naga community.

The NSF emphasized that the Government of Nagaland, supported by the Naga Legislative Assembly, has already stated that the 2019 Ban on Cow Slaughter Act will not be enforced in the state due to the constitutional protections afforded by Article 371A.

The federation stated that any attempt to hold the 'Gau Dhwaj Yatra' would be met with strong opposition from both the NSF and the wider Naga community. The NSF further stressed its commitment to maintaining socio-religious harmony and protecting the rights of the Naga people.

"The NSF will not hesitate to take strong, decisive action to protect our identity, our land, and our rights," the statement concluded, urging the organizers to abandon their plans.
