NU clarifies UG exam evaluation and result declaration system

DIMAPUR, JULY 25 (MExN): Nagaland University has issued a clarification on the conduct of undergraduate examinations and evaluation procedures for its affiliated colleges, while acknowledging some lapses in provisional result declarations and issuance of mark sheets.

According to the university, 56 colleges across Nagaland are currently offering undergraduate programmes such as BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA, and BCA. The syllabi for these programmes are framed by the University’s Board of Studies, which includes college teachers as members. These university-approved syllabi are taught by teachers appointed by the respective colleges.

The university stated that question papers are set by college teachers and moderated by a board that includes college faculty and the Head of the concerned department of the University. For evaluation, the odd semester End Examination answer scripts are assessed internally by the respective colleges. In contrast, the even semester answer scripts are evaluated externally by teachers from different colleges across the state. “The appointment of evaluators for both odd and even semesters is done at the college level,” the statement read.

It added that the University’s role is limited to facilitating the conduct of examinations and declaring results based on the marks awarded by the evaluators. “Similarly, re-evaluation of answer scripts is also carried out by college teachers within the State,” it said.

Regarding internal evaluation, the statement explained that in the second semester, three out of six papers—Multidisciplinary Course (MDC), Ability Enhancement Course (AEC), and Value-Added Course (VAC)—are evaluated internally by the colleges. In the fourth semester, two papers—Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) and VAC—are also internally evaluated. For the sixth semester, however, all papers are externally evaluated.

The current progression policy permits students to be promoted with a maximum of two backlogs. Students can advance to the fourth semester after clearing the first, to the fifth semester after clearing the second, and to the sixth semester after clearing the third.

While acknowledging “oversights during declaration of provisional results and issue of mark/grade sheets,” the University noted that a one-month window is provided for corrections if errors are reported by the concerned college authority. “The University welcomes and appreciates constructive suggestions and at the same time appeals to its stakeholders to exercise wisdom while channeling their grievances for appropriate redressal,” the statement said.
