NU launches hands-on poultry production training

Medziphema, June 2 (MExN): A five-day Hands-on Training on Poultry Production Technology commenced at the Department of Agricultural Extension, School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus on June 1. The programme is being organised by the Farmers’ Cell, SAS, Nagaland University in collaboration with the Department of Livestock Production and Management.

Addressing the inaugural programme, Prof Dipak Sinha, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University Medziphema Campus, highlighted the potential of the livestock and poultry sector in Nagaland. He noted that despite the state's high demand for meat and animal-based products, Nagaland continues to depend heavily on imports due to production deficits. He encouraged participants to view poultry farming as a business opportunity capable of generating income, employment and rural development, while stressing the importance of skill-based training and entrepreneurship for achieving greater self-reliance in agriculture.

Introducing the training programme, Prof Catherine Rutsa, Head of the Department of Livestock Production and Management, said the training would focus primarily on practical learning. "The training will focus mainly on hands-on learning rather than theory, enabling participants to acquire skills that can be readily applied in poultry enterprises," she stated.

Prof L Tongpang Longkumer, Professor-in-Charge, Extension Cell, said the Farmers’ Cell, established in 2005, has consistently organised need-based programmes for farmers and rural stakeholders. He observed that poultry production training is particularly relevant given the growing demand for poultry products and the livelihood opportunities available for rural youth.

Prof J Longkumer of the Department of Agricultural Extension Education expressed optimism about the future of agriculture and allied sectors, noting that the participants were young, educated and motivated. She also stressed the importance of financial literacy for building sustainable farm enterprises.

According to the organisers, 12 participants from different parts of Nagaland have enrolled in the programme. The participants are expected to undergo intensive practical sessions on poultry housing, brooding and chick management, feeding practices, health care, disease prevention, vaccination, record keeping and enterprise management.

The programme was chaired by Dr Mary N Odyuo, Associate Professor and Farmers’ Cell In-charge, who acknowledged the support of the university authorities, the collaborating department and members of the Farmers’ Cell.

The training programme will continue until June 5 and aims to strengthen the technical and entrepreneurial capacities of aspiring poultry farmers and agri-entrepreneurs in the state.
